Nahum was born in Honduras, and grew up in a small rural village. He
now lives and works in Toronto. His artwork is best described through
his own words
"I paint memories of places and visual experiences from my childhood.
The colours I use are vivid, the textures dramatic. I work with my imagination
through applying layers of colours and textures. The medium I use is acrylic
paint, as it allows me to work quickly and in continuity, capturing the
memories in my attempt to materialize them on the canvas.
In this series of paintings I chose to concentrate on these memories,
beliefs, and childhood experiences that play an important role in my identity.
These memories are usually depictions of places and mythological beliefs
or customs: these places are not realistic depictions since I don't live
in Honduras, and they no longer exist. The real places are depicted in
another fashion, a way they now appear to me in my memory. In this fashion
of representing sometimes i move from the abstract to representational..
In the end my paintings represent ambiguity between the abstract and the
figurative.
My intention is not to impose meanings on my paintings but to let my emotions,
thoughts and feelings come out freely. I believe art is a way by which
one can express one's feelings more completely, especially in paintings.
A painting can be a vehicle by which anyone can express or experience
something unexplainable."
