Gabrielle de Montmollin was born in Toronto, Canada, of Swiss parents. From 1979 to 1986 she worked in television at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and pursued an interest in independent film-making.

In 1986 she decided to focus on her long-standing interest in photography and took courses at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute and the Ontario College of Art, specializing in black and white photography. Her first two bodies of work, Stilled Life (1987-88) and Than Anywhere Else on Earth (1990) were exhibited at the Roshar Gallery in Toronto.
